It is a truth universally known that a writer worth their salt writes for the love of the art. No doubt, it is a highlight in a writer’s life when others recognise and celebrate a product of that love. Any recognition is a bright spot along a lonely journey that is often plagued with self-doubt.
One such bright spot was the annual JCDC Jamaica Creative Writing Awards Ceremony & Exhibition on the evening of Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the Knutsford Court Hotel in Kingston. The works of almost 60 writers, including myself, received various awards. The Official Launch and Viewing of the 2016 Exhibition topped off the event at the end of the proceedings.
From the admirable handling of the proceedings by the MC, Miss Jhanelle Davis, to the guest speaker’s stirring presentation and charge to us writers, and finally to the stacked evidence of literary talent, it was a thrilling experience. The Jamaican writing community is vibrant, alive, and well.
What an honour to be included among such talented writers! The recognition was just the encouraging pat on the back I needed.
