My New Morning Rituals

I’m sharing my new morning rituals for this year. This routine helps to make my days more positive and productive.

Before this year dawned, I sat down and took a hard look at my daily routine that had prevailed for much of 2017. I had a few good practices under my belt but there were others that I needed to dump. So I revamped my routine and came up with some morning rituals that have been working for me, so far. I’m becoming more centred and my days are gradually moving from a state of busyness to one of productivity.

That doesn’t mean that I have it all together now. I fall short sometimes. But when I do, instead of beating myself up about it, I get up and treat each new day as a reset.

Stretching

Nothing wakes my body up like a good round of stretches. Sometimes I add Cat-Cow pose and Child’s pose to the mix.

Bed-Making

This has been a practice since my childhood. I cannot start my day if my bed is a mess.

Self-Affirmations

Once I’ve made my bed, I stand in front of the mirror and talk to my reflection, using phrases to uplift and encourage myself.

Meditation

I’ve struggled with maintaining a consistent meditation practice in the past. However, since giving Headspace another go and also using Amandla Stenberg’s You are Here, I’ve been enjoying newfound clarity. I started at 10 minutes and progressed to 15 last week. Now I can’t imagine this practice not being in my life.

Journaling

In general, I write about three pages and end with an affirmation and three things for which I’m grateful. I adopted Jessica’s gratitude tip, in response to what I had mentioned about my depression in my New Year’s post.

Drinking Lemon or Plain Water

For well over a year-and-a-half, I’ve been drinking lemon or lime water at room temperature to alkalize my body before having breakfast. If I don’t have those fruits, I’ll just drink plain water.

Doggie Care

My two dogs are my children, so I tend to their needs first before my own. By the time I’ve done the above rituals, it’s light enough outside for them to eat and spend some time outdoors.

Breakfast

Again, this is another practice from my childhood. I cannot go through the day without fueling my body. My breakfast is typically Jamaican and, at times, includes dishes such as ackee and saltfish or cornmeal porridge or fritters. For a quick breakfast, I’ll have oats or a raisin bran cereal and fruits.

Cleanse *

After I’ve had breakfast, I shower and moisturise my skin and hair.

E-mails & Social Media *

Before I start my work, I reply to e-mails and comments on my social media posts and do a final check on scheduled posts.

I’m sure that as the year progresses, I’ll either add to these morning rituals or tweak them. Life changes constantly, so it’s vital for me to have a fluid approach. That way, I can find and live in that sweet spot that’s at the heart of a winning day.

Update (1/29/2018): I’m now using Insight Timer instead of Headspace and Lauren Ash’s guided meditation. Thanks to Jackie Thomas for suggesting the former.

Since 2015 I have kept my workouts in the morning, and it has benefited me. It was all too easy to plead tiredness and skip a day or two (or week or two!) here and there when I scheduled them for evenings after work. Last year from June to December I did not miss a single workout Sunday to Friday (Saturday is my rest day), and in December I was working out 7 days a week (I was doing a challenge for 30 days and there were no rest days.) After my workout, I sit and meditate. Headspace has been… Read more »
