Reflections + 6th Blog Anniversary

Reflections

I’m on the second day of journaling my 2017 and new year reflections. I’m so grateful that I’ve lived to greet another new year. There’s something beautiful about it. At its dawning, it has all our hopes and dreams wrapped up in it, just waiting to become real.

Even before the dawn of 2018, I was in a state of nervous excitement. It was as if the air around me became charged in the days leading up to today. I decided to just embrace the feeling and not try to analyse it. So I’m welcoming this brand new year with wide open arms. I’m ready to receive all the new lessons, along with an abundance of courage, self-confidence, self-love, growth, creative opportunities, and resources. Most of all, I want to bloom wherever I’m planted.

6 Years Strong

Today is also special for me because it’s this blog’s sixth anniversary. Ages ago, I started a natural hair blog on Blogger, before moving on to one with a Jamaican focus on Wordpress.com. I transitioned from that to another that would turn out to be the seed of this present site. Two years ago, I decided that it was time for me to have a self-hosted blog. It was one of the best decisions I made.

Now, after making many mistakes, I’ve evolved into a consistent blogger and budding content creator. It took me a long time to get to this point. Not that I’ve arrived. Maybe we never do. But each day, I feel myself being guided along my creative path. It’s like walking along a yellow brick road. I don’t know where it will take me but I sure am enjoying the journey.

My 2018 Intentions

I stopped setting New Year’s resolutions a long time ago. Instead, I set intentions. I find them to be more freeing. Those at the top of my list for 2018 include self-care and completing my novel.

My self-care intentions include…

  • Getting enough sleep at night.
  • Eating on time.
  • Staying hydrated. I plan to keep a glass of water on my desk as a reminder.
  • Moving my body in ways that I enjoy so that it doesn’t feel like a chore.
  • Tracking my mental health because my depression steamrolled me last year.
  • Continuing to reduce my sugar intake. Right now, I’m at about 50%.
  • Affirming myself daily. Towards the end of last year, I started doing this by talking to my reflection in the mirror, first thing in the morning.

As for my writing, I made a game-changing decision. Towards the end of 2017, I asked the lovely Mek to be my accountability writing partner. I had featured her in my Storyteller Series last year. In a nutshell, she’ll hold me accountable for finishing my novel by a date I’ve set. Y’know, like fire under my butt. She’s not my only writing support. Leslie Reese, who blogs at Folklore & Literacy, had agreed sometime before to provide me with any writing help I need. In fact, she’s the reason I had connected with Mek. Writing is a lonely activity but we don’t have to go it alone. More and more, I’m learning how vital it is to have a “council of writing companions”, as Leslie had put it.

2018 Word

It’s been a while since I’ve consciously thought of a word that held deep meaning for me, one that would guide my year. Last year, as I reflected on the new rituals I wanted to create, I knew that this old practice would find its way back into my life. So here’s my word for 2018.

Happy New Year, everyone! Today is not only the second day of my end-of-year and new year reflections but also my blog's sixth anniversary.

My 2018 word.

I know. It’s already in my mantra. But it has been floating around in my head since the middle of 2017, long before I came up with “write-create-thrive”. It resonates with me and gets me excited. No other word is more apt at this time for shaping my life this year.

Blog Changes

For those of you who have been here before, you can tell that I’ve spruced up the site. I upgraded to a Premium theme, which offers me a wide range of features. I also made a minor adjustment to my brand colours. But other changes are coming.

I’ve decided to discontinue the Friday Favourites series and the Reading Guides. The Storyteller series will remain, though. It means that I’ll be blogging once per week, instead of twice. When I looked at my schedule and responsibilities for 2018, I realised that I needed to make this choice. But there’s an upside. Those series will now make room for new topics that I hope you’ll enjoy and find useful. I want to serve you better in 2018. Feel free to drop me a line to let me know some of the ways I can do so.

Here’s to a Year of Our Dreams

On a final note, whatever this new year holds in store for us, let’s make it a year that we can be proud of. I’m a firm advocate of starting where you are, using what you have (no matter how little), and doing what you can. So let’s learn and grow and shower this world with our gifts. Let’s bring it, in 2018.

In case you haven’t started your reflections yet, it’s not too late. I have a special gift for you, which you can get by clicking on the link in the post. It’s a free journal resource for your end-of-year reflections. The prompts are evergreen, so you can use them year after year.

Do you have a 2018 word? Feel free to share it and why you chose it.

Happy New Year Nadine!! Such a beautiful post. Happy also 6 years!!! That’s so beautiful. This will be my 8th year blogging, which is insane to imagine! I LOVE your self-care intentions. If it helps, I found that journalling really helped me especially mental health wise. Not only is it a way to actually track it, but I try to share 3 things that I am grateful for everyday that don’t cost money and that you can’t buy. It also starts my day of beautifully and I’ve found that practicing gratitude really helped me. I hope it helps you too!… Read more »

Happy New Year, Jessica! Thanks so much for your beautiful wishes.

Yes, it does help. Every little bit does. Thanks for the tip and your encouragement. When I saw your life goal for this year – SELF-LOVE – I got excited because it resonates with my self-care intentions. Self-care = self-love.

I’m so thankful for you and I wish you abundant goodness and even more growth and success this year. xxx

Happy New Year, Nadine💖. Congratulations on your blog’s 6th anniversary, too! Your blog and IG thread are two of my favorite places to receive inspiration – partly because your openness, generosity, and methods of self-care are infectious, so thank you. I was surprised to find myself feeling drained and wiped-out at year’s end so I’ve decided to use this first week of the year to reflect on 2017 and put my hopes and dreams – my intentions – for 2018 in writing. I’ve never selected a resonant, aspirational word, before. I’m going to do so this year. …Uhm…having Mek as… Read more »

Happy New Year, my dearest Leslie! I know what it’s like to feel drained at the end of a year. Take all the time you need to rejuvenate yourself. Your new year can begin anytime, not just on January 1. Please share your 2018 word when you’re ready. Aww, I’m glad that they inspire you. It’s my hope that those two platforms will have an inspiring impact this year. Yes, I think everyone should have some sort of accountability partner. We all need that extra nudge. For me, sometimes it needs to be a shove, lol. Oh boy. Yes, that’s… Read more »

Your new site is beautiful, Nads! I made sure to bookmark it so I can come back easily. I love that word of the year for you, it’s very fitting. I haven’t found my word or words yet, still working on that. Happy anniversary to the blog, as you grow and change, it’s awesome that you have grown and changed it to reflect your new depths.

Thank you so much, Charlie! When I remember my first Wordpress site, I can’t help but shake my head and laugh. It has been a journey. You’re one of my faithful supporters and I appreciate you and your encouragement.

Take your time with finding your word. Or maybe it will find you. 😉 When it does, I’d love to know what it is.

Happy blogiversary!

Reducing your sugar intake isn’t easy. I’m proud of you for continuing to chip away at that goal. I’m doing the same thing this year.

What are some of the topics and/or series you hope to add to your site in 2018?

Happy New Year, Lydia! Thank you! Oh, it’s such a challenge. Making the decision was the first important step. But I’ll get to where I need to be. I’m looking forward to the day when my sugar intake comes only from fruits, raisins, and honey. Writing-related topics will always be a focus, especially since I’m working on my novel. I also want to stay true to my first love, the short story, so that’s something I’m looking at to see how I can make it relatable to my readers. Also, I want to share a bit more about my experiences… Read more »

Loved this post. Bookmarked it for deeper reflection later. My word for the year is MOVE, because I find myself stalling in quite a few areas and it’s holding me back.

Nadine, loving your positive and determined spirit. It’s contagious!

This means so much to me, Kev. Thank you! It’s people like you who keep me going. 😀

One of my intentions this year is to make the time for reading my favourite blogs, yours included. I missed out on so much gold last year. Please bear with me. Keep on sharing your knowledge and expertise. It’s valuable and necessary.

Happy New Year Nadine! Damn right I’ll be keeping you accountable bwahahahahah. I love “I want to bloom wherever I am planted” and your intentions could quite easily be mine really- those things are generally floating about in my head, but the standout for me at the moment is to reduce my sugar intake. And THRIVE! what a great word! that goes hand in hand with blooming wherever you are planted. After reading that the first word that popped into my head for me was TRUST. This year will be one where I will trust my self but also trust… Read more »

Happy New Year, my dear. YES! I love your attitude. I can feel the fire under my butt already, lol.

Glad to know that you can relate to my intentions. I intend to make thriving my default setting. And I love your 2018 word. I, too, need to trust myself, as well as the universe.

Girl, I’ve never done drugs or even smoked but when I think of sugar, crack comes to mind. It’s a hard habit to kick but I’m gonna get there.

Yes, it is a drug! I found it easier to stop smoking, and that has been over 7 years now! Good to see you are walking the talk with your writing goals 🙂
